When Thomas invites Hiro to come along, Hiro leaves Sodor for the first time ever. When Hiro calls the Harley Jones show to defend his friend's honor, the more Hiro talked, the more Ashima mocked, which ultimately lands the off-duty Thomas in an international railway racing exhibition: Rails Around the Globe. When Sir Topham Hatt found out about the situation, Hiro was brought to the Sodor Steamworks, where Victor oversaw his restoration. After breaking down again while trying to avoid Spencer, Hiro was hidden away in another siding, where the engines visited him and kept him company. Thomas also had the rest of the Steam Team help in the restoration, and Hiro quickly gained their friendship. Thomas eventually found him and, fearing Hiro would be scrapped if he was not Really Useful, promised to bring him back to his former glory while keeping him a secret from Sir Topham Hatt. However, the parts never came and Hiro was all but forgotten. To escape being scrapped, he was put on a siding, where he had to wait for the parts to come from his homeland. The East Portal resides in Rollinsville, about an hour and a half west of Denver. The entrances to Moffat Tunnel are still a sight to see – a gorgeous stone archway with ornamental bronze lettering listing the tunnel’s name. Though he did not live to see its construction, Moffat Tunnel was built in the mid 1920s and officially opened for business in 1928. Moffat’s dream was to build a railroad line from Denver to Salt Lake City that crossed the Continental Divide underground in order to avoid the steep grades and snow accumulation. The old one followed a steep grade and imposed harsh weather conditions, which made it difficult for the railroad to profit. It was conceived of by railroad tycoon David Moffat in 1902 as an alternative route to the railroad line that preceded it. The system was very effective during the harsh winter of 2013/14.Tunnels are an incredible feat of human engineering. In 2012, time was not available before winter set in for the work in Tunnel 16 to be completed, so construction was completed in August 2013. The thickness of the system is minimized as much as possible because of the limited clearance available. The insulation system consists of a drainage mat hung on the tunnel lining, an insulation plank, and galvanized expanded metal to protect the insulation planks. ![]() The direct fixation system involves attaching the insulation system directly to the tunnel lining. In Tunnel 16, we designed a “direct fixation” insulation system because the available clearance was very limited. Construction was completed from September through November of 2012. Post-construction inspections have shown the system is working very well. Existing utilities in the tunnel, including a fiber optic cable and communication lines, were incorporated into the design and construction. Drainage was installed on the field side of the icing shield, through the concrete footings and into the existing tunnel drainage system. ![]() The multilayered insulation system consists of two layers of thick drainage mats on the field side, installation planks, steel channel lagging, a sprayed waterproofing membrane, and a two-inch (50 mm) layer of fiber-reinforced microsilica shotcrete on the track side. The system is supported by steel sets placed on new concrete footings. There was adequate clearance in Moffat Tunnel to install a self-supporting insulation system. The icing shields had to fit between the clearance envelope and the existing tunnel lining, and be constructed under live track conditions, in two- to four-hour work windows. McMillen Jacobs Associates was hired to design separate passive icing shields for each tunnel, and both icing shields were designed and bid in 2012. By 2011, the insulation needed replacement again. Insulation in Tunnel 16 was initially installed near the east portal in the late 1980s by railroad personnel and had been replaced several times because of deterioration. Drip shields, but no insulation, had been previously installed in Moffat Tunnel in this area. A 70-foot-long (21 m) section of Moffat Tunnel experienced extensive icing during the winter of 2010/11. These tunnels are subject to heavy precipitation and cold for a significant part of the year, and both tunnels have a long history of icing issues. Moffat Tunnel and Tunnel 16 are located on the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad in the mountains west of Denver, Colorado. ![]() It was created by Flexa in partnership with ConsenSys, an Ethereum-focused software engineering firm. Lawrence and Dua also assert that campaigns by migrants against racism actually contribute “to the active colonization of Aboriginal peoples” and that “anti-racism is premised on an ongoing colonial project” and accepts “a colonizing social formation” (p.252). That’s right folks…even slaves were privileged settlers! Yet people of color live on land that is appropriated and contested, where Aboriginal peoples are denied nationhood and access to their own lands. Broad differences exist between those brought as slaves, currently working as migrant laborers, refugees without legal documentation, or émigrés who have obtained citizenship. Lawrence and Dua argue that in Canada, all One particularly terrible example that Sharma cites are the arguments of Bonita Lawrence, a Métis scholar, and Enakshi Dua, a self-identified “Asian settler colonist”. Indeed, in the effort to render the experiences of Indigenous National-Natives and Migrants as incommensurable, the violence done to those who were made into Migrants is rendered as politically unimportant. Instead, those whom imperial states (and later nation-states) clearly racialized as undesirable and inferior (e.g., Trask’s “Asians” in Hawai’i) are now represented as having been a party to the very projects they were expressly – and juridically – excluded from. Portraying all non-Indigenous people as “settlers” assumes that no clear distinction was made between Whites and non-Whites in the “White Settler” colonial projects, nor that any distinction is made between those racialized as White and those racialized as not White in today’s White National-Native projects. To start with, as Sharma writes, it downplays the racist treatment of migrants: This is a profoundly conservative world view that expresses some of the worst, and most self-defeating, aspects of privilege theory politics. Migrant populations, including those that have suffered – and continue to suffer – from racism are often portrayed as a privileged layer who benefit from the racism directed towards Indigenous people. As Sharma explains, it has become quite common in left-wing activist and academic circles to argue that migrants are “settlers” or even “colonisers”, immigration is “conquest”, and that Indigenous people need to be “centred” at the expense of migrants. Nandita Sharma has written a very useful book that rightly polemicises against those on the progressive left who counterpose the rights of Indigenous people to those of migrants. The Butch Cassidy soundtrack was among A&M Records’ best-selling albums that year. “We got through five takes I couldn’t have done one more,” he said with a laugh. When Thomas performed the vocal for the film’s soundtrack, he was recovering from an acute case of laryngitis. David tried to come up with another title, as the sun is shining brightly throughout the sequence. “I wrote the entire melody, and the only words that kept running through my mind from top to bottom were ‘Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head,’” he recalled. Watching the scene on a moviola, Bacharach knew the song would start with a ukulele, he wrote in his autobiography, Anyone Who Had a Heart. To give Bacharach an idea of what he was looking for musically, Hill had cut the sequence to Simon & Garfunkel’s jaunty “ The Fifty-Ninth Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy).” The bicycle scene was shot as a playful musical interlude. ![]() And that brings us to “ Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” which arrives about 30 minutes into the film while the goings are still loose and affable. Hill did not want music playing under the dialogue, which means the soundtrack runs less than a half hour. “There are only seven music sequences in the entire film,” said film-music expert Jon Burlingame. “The characters are modern rather than traditional in approach and temperament, and dialogue…has a very contemporary rhythm and sound to it, and we didn’t want a traditional Western score.” “The picture was designed for a contemporary feel,” Hill, a Yale music major, said in a documentary about Butch Cassidy filmed in 1968-69. It remains an irresistible earworm and perfectly suited to a film that was made for its rebellious, radical times and went against the traditional Western grain. But thanks to its charismatic leads-Paul Newman and Robert Redford as “two-bit outlaws on the dodge”-William Goldman’s puckish, Oscar-winning script, and, especially, Bacharach’s unconventional score, the film went on to be the biggest box office hit of 1969 and has since been embraced as a classic.Ĭomposed by Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David, “Raindrops” is the film’s breakout hit and its legacy song an upbeat and indefatigable ode to feeling free. When it premiered 50 years ago this week, George Roy Hill’s revisionist Western initially struggled with critics. Stevens was far from the last person who didn’t quite get “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head”-or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, for that matter. ![]() “I don’t know why anyone would pass on a song that’s going to be in a Paul Newman movie,” Thomas said in a recent interview. The industry thrived and grew, and by the early 1950s, the largest seafood port in the country had a fleet of 25 ships. By 1938, the Consolidated Fisheries Company of Lewes was the largest processing plant in the United States, with menhaden providing ingredients contained in fertilizer, vitamins and even makeup. The menhaden fishing industry was born to provide a substitute for whale oil in the 1880s. The Native Americans were first to realize the importance of the fish as fertilizer. This allowed the nets to air dry in preparation for the next day. The reel was usually turned by African American watermen, who stood inside the net reel and sang chanteys, while walking to rotate the structure. Unfortunately, the current location of the net reel has riled some neighbors and stirred up a controversy over the past three years that is still not fully resolved. That one artifact is a restored net reel on the Lewes Historical Society campus in downtown Lewes. Except for one artifact, photographs and a few historical markers and signs provide the only connection to the menhaden fishing industry. The factories were torn down to make way for beach-front housing, and now there is very little evidence of that time in Lewes' history. Today, mechanism has replaced the hard labor provided by hundreds of crew members who set the nets and then hauled them in. Residents planned their beach outings based on the wind's direction.Īlthough the six-ship fleet spotted along Lewes Beach uses modern technology and state-of-the-art fishing equipment, the basics are the same as used decades ago – spotting planes to find the schools of fish and large nets to reel them in. Lifelong Lewes residents tell stories of large fish kills washing up on the beach, and there was always the smell of the factories. There were benefits, but there were also drawbacks. If blood pressure or oxygen concentration is low, the cardiovascular control centre increases the rate of SAN firing through activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Shock is a severe drop in blood pressure that causes a dangerous. When the medulla oblongata receives signals from baroreceptors and chemoreceptors, it changes the rate at which the sino-atrial node (SAN) fires (learn more about the SAN here). High blood pressure (also referred to as HBP, or hypertension) is when your blood pressure, the force of blood flowing through your blood vessels, is consistently too high. Baroreceptors detect changes in blood pressure and are found in the aortic and carotid bodies. Two types of receptors, baroreceptors ( pressure receptors) and chemoreceptors ( chemical receptors) are responsible for detecting stimuli in the blood and signalling to the medulla oblongata to modify our heart rate. It works by sending impulses along sympathetic or parasympathetic neurones which release different neurotransmitters onto the SAN - the SAN then modifies its rate of firing to slow down or speed up the heart rate. Countless studies prove that this is the optimal rate for heart rate variability (HRV), oxygen uptake and delivery, nervous system balance, blood pressure. A part of the medulla oblongata called the cardiovascular control centre is responsible for changing heart rate according to our body’s needs. It is involved in unconscious processes, such as controlling heart rate and breathing rate. The medulla oblongata is a brain region found at the bottom of the brain, in the brain stem. |
